    My mother handed me a tube of Kiehl’s Ultra Protection Eye Gel when she dropped me off at my college dorm freshman year. For many years, that—along with some SPF—was enough. I graduated, moved around the country for work and love, got married, had kids. And then suddenly, I was 40 and everything—and I mean everything—dropped.

    As an elderstates woman here at Glossier, I’ve been asked for my perspective on the “anti-aging” vs “pro-aging” debate. The truth is, there’s a lot that’s great about hitting 40. I’m lucky enough to have a terrific partner and still-sweet kids who want to spend time with me, parents who are healthy and active, a wide network of loyal friends and brilliant colleagues, and an apartment big enough to host a dinner party. I’m established in my career and stimulated by my work and more confident and comfortable in my skin than ever before. But with age, that skin does need some help. And in that regard, I have no issue with “anti-aging”. At the end of the day, it’s about efficacy and finding products that provide needed benefits. I take inspiration from the role models we have who are aging gorgeously (Jennifer Connelly! Brigitte Macron! Kirsten Green!) and aim high.

    Fortunately, my mother came before me, and not just because she had the foresight to offer me that little tube of Kiehl’s. She has inherently terrific skin, which for the most part I inherited. (Maybe we need a little help in the elasticity department. The rest I can’t complain about.) So, the tough part was reconciling myself to the fact that the issue was not about fixing some inherent issue, but rather about fixing an inherent life condition: aging. It is what it is, no matter what you call it.

    So why not talk about it? This morning I met a 42-year old friend for breakfast. She’s a gorgeous LA girl: not a shred of makeup, the perfect messy topknot, killer bikini body. And she told me that she’d put on nine pounds over the course of the summer. Nine pounds, one summer! I couldn’t see them, but she insisted. Another dear friend, who’s hitting 50 but looks like an enviable 30, texted in crisis as she was shopping for her upcoming media tour: “I tried on outfits and I have weird new lumps. I have a Thass. No, it’s a Hass.” The struggle is real!

    Back to the face. There are all sorts of beneficial products to try, and thankfully dieting isn’t the recommended path forward (more sagging!). In my experience—note to editors: and you are not old enough to disagree with me—there are a few products you absolutely need to use when you hit 40 (and that you should probably start using many years before you get there). I have a personal theory, not supported by any evidence, that my skin likes to be kept guessing, so I try to mix up my daily product regimen. But there are a few products I won’t live without:

    My Clarisonic. I use it in the shower around 3x/week to enliven my skin and I just don’t feel as clean or luminous without it.

    Tula’s Probiotic Cleanser. A mild but effective cleanser for everyday use in your morning shower. At night I prefer to get the makeup off with micellar water, Goop’s Luminous Melting Cleanser or Glossier’s Milky Jelly. Once a week I use Tula’s Exfoliating Treatment Mask—not a cleanser per se, but I feel renewed and pure when I rinse it off. And the Chok Chok Green Tea Toner is very brightening—you really can feel them working when applied.

    Serums and face oils. I worked briefly at Goop and still rave about the Goop Enriching Face Oil. It’s great for more mature skin, as is their Revitalizing Day Moisturizer. (It doesn’t contain SPF, so that’s where Glossier’s Invisible Shield comes in.) This time of year, I use Skin Inc’s Encapsulated Licorice Serum—licorice and green tea in tiny seaweed capsules, plus antioxidants galore to protect aging skin. And have been on a collagen binge of late, adding bone broth powder (Wild Foods’ is particularly great) to my golden lattes and using Mizon’s Collagen 100 Serum. I was wrestling with some seasonal transition skin issues last month and in desperation sprung for a bottle of Vintner’s Daughter—we 40-somethings will try anything—before deciding that it would be waste to use it on irritated skin so I’ve stockpiled it for the winter. Will report back.

    Masks, snails and other Korean delicacies. I have a workspace in Koreatown that I use for quiet thinking and working time, and I discovered my favorite mask shop on a 32nd street coffee run one afternoon. I try to sheet mask a couple of times a week, and am pretty agnostic about the masks I use—there are so many cute ones to try! But I have fallen hard for the Banobagi Vita Cocktail Silver Foil Mask. The results are indisputable. I get compliments on my skin every time I use them. I also adore Tonymoly’s Ferment Snail Cream Moisturizer and the companion eye cream as they’re super-rich and hydrating. The Tonymoly Intense Care Gold 24K Snail Hydro Gel Mask is also great—how can it not be, with all those things?

    Why Humans Lack an ‘anti-aging switch’

    You may have seen the news that the human lifespan cannot be extended beyond about 115 years, as shown by a demographic analysis confirming that the steady improvements in lifespan seen for many populations over recent decades has stalled since the 1990s.

    The researchers’ conclusion that “the maximum lifespan of humans is fixed and subject to natural constraints” is sobering reading for those who dream that human ageing can one day be successfully hacked. But for evolutionary ecologists, it should not come as a surprise.
    As well as striking a note of biological realism, this research also highlights how research on human ageing often neglects the insights available from evolutionary theory — and particularly from a research field called “comparative life-history ecology”.
    This genre of research explains why mice and humans grow old at such different rates (more on why this is a problem for ageing research later). It aims to bring us closer to understanding the “ultimate” reasons why we age — which in turn can tell us whether the hundreds of millions of dollars poured into ageing research are actually a good investment.
     
    Strive as we might, an evolutionary perspective tells us that maximum lifespans will not be extended by simply solving one symptom of ageing after another.

    Growing old — the ‘why’ as well as the ‘how’

    Ageing — or “senescence”, to use the biological term — is defined as a decline in physiological condition with age. You might wonder why natural selection allows this to happen at all. The answer is that senescence happens in a “selection shadow” — that is, after organisms have already reproduced and passed on their genes. There is no real evolutionary penalty for failing to ward off the ravages of old age, because in animal populations relatively few individuals make it into their geriatric years anyway, thanks to predators, disease, hardship or bad luck.
    Natural selection reaches a crescendo at sexual maturity, when most individuals in a population are alive and striving to produce viable offspring. This is the age at which the genetic baton is passed to the next generation. Unfortunately for those of us over 40, it’s all downhill from here in terms of the evolutionary pressure to maintain a healthy body.
    This knowledge — that selection pressure changes with age in a way that depends not just on the expected lifespan but also on the timing of reproductive effort — is fundamental to evolutionary theories of ageing. It is also fundamental to how we design and interpret the research that aims to help us prolong our own maximum lifespans.
    Many of the species most frequently studied by biologists — such as mice, flies and worms — are chosen precisely because their short lifespans and fast generational turnover make them quicker and easier to work with. But their short lives and adaptable reproductive strategies actually make them unsuitable models for testing drugs or other anti-ageing interventions aimed at slowing human ageing.
    Short-lived species seem to be able to “trade in” their investment in growth and sexual reproduction in return for slowing down the ageing process — switching to a physiological state in which they instead invest in maintenance of body condition and warding off senescence.
    This strategy makes sense for species whose brief lives can be subject to wide variability in environmental conditions. For a small rodent, having a litter of pups would be rather pointless if food is too scarce for them to grow and survive to adulthood. Hamsters, for example, can instead enter a torpid state that actually protects their cells from ageing over winter.
    In contrast, species with long expected natural lifespans (which have reduced their mortality risk by evolving to a large size, or being able to fly or hibernate, or having a large brain) have already invested strongly, and perhaps maximally, in protecting their cells from ageing. This suggests there is no “anti-ageing switch” available to flick for a species such as ourselves. Whether or not we have children, it seems we’re already naturally geared to live as long as we possibly can.
    This might sound weird, but it’s supported by a simple comparative analysis that a colleague and I published back in 2010, in which we compared the average expected lifespan with the maximum recorded lifespan for various mammals. From this we can calculate a simple ratio of average to maximum lifespan, which tells you, for a given species, how much it is theoretically possible to expand lifespan.
    If we take the ratio of a short-lived species like a mouse and apply it to humans, we would predict a maximum lifespan of about 400 years! But despite all of our efforts to push the boundaries through medicine and nutrition, humans (along with elephants and other highly durable animals) don’t come close to these biblical lifespans.

    So if mice find it much easier to slow down the ageing process than we do, what does that mean for anti-ageing studies using mice? Sadly, the implication is that most tactics shown to prolong lifespan in mice — such as calorie restriction — will be far less effective in humans.
    If we are to break the evolutionary constraints on maximum lifespan in humans, we need to better take account of life-history ecology. This theory tells us that the causes of ageing are to be found not at the end of our lives, but at the beginning.
    How our maximum lifespan is ultimately limited will be understood by research that seeks to answer why the pace of life varies so much among different animals. For me, this is the take-home message from this recent excellent research.

    I Got Anti-Aging Lip Injections, And I’ve Never Looked Younger

    OK, be honest—what comes to mind when you think of lip injections? Probably mixed images of Kylie Jenner, Courtney Love, and a pufferfish, right? And, hey, that’s fair, because fillers have gotten a pretty bad rap over the last few decades for being one of the most obvious (and most easily botched) of cosmetic procedures.

    But thanks to two new, FDA-approved fillers that promise to deliver incredibly natural-looking results, lip injections are now growing in popularity as a preventive, anti-aging measure, rather than the va-va-voom lip plumper they’ve always been known as. And because I would very much like for my mouth to look young forever, I decided to test out the new fillers and see just how natural—or crazy—I would look.

    I have to first say that thin lips were never much of a concern for me, so I really never saw myself getting injections. But, as Los Angeles dermatologist Annie Chiu (who is one of the first dermatologists in the country to use Refyne and Defyne, the latest fillers on the US market) pointed out when I spoke with her, “Injections are now more about maintenance, and less about enhancement.” According to Chiu, our lips start deflating when we hit 30, and then continue to thin out and head downhill from there—literally. Our mouths start losing structure as we age, which leads to down-turned lips, ‘marionette’ lines (the deep parenthesis-like wrinkles on either side of your mouth), and even bone loss at the jawline. “But if you soften those changes with fillers [early on], you change the visual cues of how you and other people perceive your age,” says Chiu. Basically, fillers are the new fountain of youth.

    And just as Botox has slowly shifted from being the thing dads get during midlife crises to the thing twenty-somethings get to prevent wrinkles, lip fillers are now being recommended to keep mouths looking young, and it’s all thanks to Refyne and Defyne. The new fillers (which have been used in Canada and Europe for years, but have just been approved by the FDA) are hyaluronic-based formulas, which gives them a new ability to blend in with your own collagen and flex naturally beneath your skin, without that stiff, “did she just get her lips done?” look.

    Despite the glowing promises, though, I asked Chiu to start me off with only the tiniest bit of filler, just in case the process went horribly, horribly wrong. Chiu started by correcting the scaffolding of my face, injecting Defyne (used for filling deep-set lines) into my marionette lines, the corners of my lips, and around my jaw, before injecting Refyne (used for plumping fine lines and folds) into four quadrants around my lips, using a long, tiny tube inserted beneath my skin to position the injections further from my actual lips, which helps prevent crazy bruising and swelling.

    It sounds awful, but the prick of the needle felt like any other—not exactly pleasant, but not particularly painful, either. That is, until she directly injected filler into my lips in a few spots, which really, really hurt. Thankfully, the whole process was over rather quickly, and by the end of it, Chiu had injected less than 3/5 of a teaspoon into my face. In fact, the changes were so subtle, only Chiu, her assistant, and I could pinpoint what had gone down in that office, and only if we stared really closely at my mouth.

    After the appointment, it took a few days for my lips to feel like themselves again, though I suspect those feelings were primarily psychosomatic—not even my best friend could tell I had anything done just hours after leaving the doctor’s office, which was exactly the effect I was going for. It’s been three weeks since my appointment, and mouth still has totally natural movements, with only the subtlest of extra smoothness, which I’m pretty sure only I can notice.

    But even if I can’t see my fillers (which is a good thing), I like knowing that I have a new anti-aging strategy in place for the future. Yes, it kind of sounds like bullshit, but you can’t argue with research, which shows that these types of injections really do have a preventative effect on aging. “Studies have shown that treating the lips, the areas around the lips, and the smile lines with fillers may actually prevent wrinkle detention,” says Chiu, “So the process is preventative in that it acts like a mechanical force [against deep-set wrinkles].”

    And while some people might scoff at using their rent money on something so subtle (a treatment like mine costs about $700, and lasts about a year, max), I personally see the value in keeping my 20-year-old face shape and smile for the rest of my life, if possible. Does it mean I’ll have to skip a few nights out during the year to afford subsequent treatments? Abso-fricken-lutely. But as I see it, all of the sleep I’ll get and the drinks I’ll skip during those nights will pack an anti-aging bonus all their own.
