If You Always Fall Asleep In Your Makeup, Here’s What You Should Do The Next Morning

It doesn’t make much sense when I say it out loud, but taking off my makeup before bed feels like it requires more than double the amount of effort it takes to apply that morning. That being said, I’m not perfect, so even though I know better, there have been plenty of nights where I accidentally, and even purposely, neglected to take off my makeup. The (semi) good news? It happens! The bad news? It really shouldn’t.

On the surface, all you’ll see after a full night’s sleep and full face of makeup is a bit of smearing here, there, and raccoon eyes blinking back at you in the mirror. Unfortunately, though, looks can be deceiving, and what appears to be just a run of mascara, could actually be the visual signs of skin damage. Here’s what to do as soon as you wake up with a full face of makeup.

1. Remove Your Makeup

The first step is probably the most obvious here, but the first order of business after a full night’s sleep all dolled up is to strip your skin of all the cosmetic gunk hanging around from the night before. Where to start? Always at the eyes.

Dr. S Manjula Jegasothy, MD of the Miami Skin Institute told,

Many eye shadows contain quartz and mica, which are highly irritating to eyelid skin and can
concentrate in the fold, releasing dark particles into the eye for days later. This can cause

2. Wash Up

6. Go Natural For The Day

At this point, your skin has probably endured a full 24 hours or more of cosmetics. After you’ve taken the necessary steps to cleanse, let your skin breathe for a while. Take a day off from makeup application (you are gorgeous as is, anyway!), and restrain from picking at any blemishes or sensitive areas that may have

5 Things You Should Never Do Right Before Bed

You might have heard people say that you should only use your bed for sleeping, and in this blog I want to explain why that is SO true. I’m sure many of us have had a night where we felt we only tossed and turned and got pretty much no sleep at all. I know between busy lives and distractions finding their way into our bedrooms, plenty of you are having a lousy nights sleep.Your routine and behaviours during the day can have a big impact on the quality of your sleep that night. Healthy sleep habits, known as good sleep hygiene are really important to ease you into the land of slumber. Bad habits, on the other hand, can really ruin a good nights sleep.For a better chance of nabbing a restful night of sleep and waking up ready to take on the world, here are a few things you should never do in bed.

1. Be tempted by late night snacking

While its a bad idea to go to bed hungry, eating a big meal right before you sleep can also lead to a restless night. Often snacking before bed isn’t necessarily the problem, what you choose to snack on has more of an impact. As you may have guessed, late night burgers aren’t topping the list for foods that make it easier to sleep. Foods with high fat content can cause heartburn, which may keep you awake long after you’ve finished snacking.

If you’re feeling peckish, I recommend opting for lighter options or foods with naturally occurring tryptophan If you were wondering, tryptophan is an amino acid that assists serotonin production, which can help you drift off to sleep. You can read about some of my favorite late night snacks here. Stay away from sugary cookies or biscuits, as well as caffeinated drinks, as the sugar hit can help keep you awake. When your tummy rumbles at night, avoid snacking in bed too. Your bed should be a place of relaxation and used only for sleep.

2. Finish off that presentation

I am sure the idea of working from the comfort of your bed is VERY appealing to many people. In saying that, being in work mode when you should be in sleep mode (or at least pre-sleep mode) means your brain is still very active. When you are on a deadline or replying to emails, you’re still thinking and planning. Your brain, being the clever little thing it is, may then begin to associate your bedroom with this kind of activity.

Following a nightly pre-sleep routine can help your brain to associate your bedroom with sleeping (which is why I recommend not to eat or work in it). Once you’ve trained your mind to recognize its time to slow down, you may find falling asleep much easier.

3. Have an Argument

Being angry or having a heated argument with your significant other (or anyone else) can severely affect your ability to nod off. Your bed should be a sanctuary where you feel calm and relaxed. Arguing leaves you feeling tense and flustered, so it will probably take you longer to fall asleep. Even worse, not getting enough sleep can make it hard to get through the next day – hello crankiness!

There is also a chance you will replay the argument over and over, which can reinforce the negative mood and keep you awake longer. If you feel yourself getting agitated at a situation or a person remind yourself now is not the best time to act on it. Sleep it off and then pick-up the conversation again in the morning.

4. Sleep with your pets

I love a cuddle with my dogs as much as the next person (or even more!), but they don’t always understand the idea of quiet time. Sharing your bed with a pet may be comforting, but its not always good for a peaceful nights sleep. Particularly if your pet is a large breed, their movements can disrupt you during the night. There is a good chance you’ll notice every time they scratch, roll or make noise. Not to mention they can hog the covers, leaving you in an intense game of tug o war when you want to roll over!

5. Watch TV

If you are one of those lucky people who can fall asleep anywhere, watching a little TV before bed might not bother you. For many of us though, the light from your screen can affect our brains ability to wind down. While you might think the noise and the lower lighting makes it easier to drift off, the light can actually affect your circadian rhythms. Without going into too much detail, the light can actually trick your brain and body thats it is time to be awake when you should be winding down.

The same goes for tablets and phones even with the new night modes many of them have, its best to keep them away from the bed. In general, try to keep your bedroom as dark as possible.

Poor sleep can have such a big influence on your productivity for the day, and it really is essential for a healthy lifestyle. I recommend being consistent with your sleep schedule and practicing good sleep hygiene as much as possible.

Try to stop worrying so much if you cant fall asleep straight away, as this can often keep you awake as well. As with many concerns, a positive mindset can help to encourage a better quality of sleep. I hope these suggestions make it easier for you to get plenty of restful slumber!

Why Mila Kunis’s Latest Magazine Cover Is About So Much More Than Makeup

Going without makeup changes a woman’s face, softening the lines so dramatically created by contour and highlights. Take away her mascara and the average adult woman looks 10 years younger. There’s just something so innocent about a naked face, freshly washed for the day.

And 2016 has seen a spate of bare-faced trends: no-makeup makeup (just a BB cream and a prayer), dewy skin (highlighted cheekbones, lightly curled lashes) and now, finally, no cosmetics at all.

On the cover of Glamour’s August issue, expectant mom and actress Mila Kunis, 32, poses totally barefaced. According to Ying Chu, Glamour’s beauty director, she’s only wearing skin serum and lip balm.

The move isn’t new, of course. Celebrities have been pulling the here’s my real face card for years. But it does seem as if we’re ushering in a new wave of self-representation in the selfie era.

Natural is in, whether that’s in the bras we’re buying or hairstyles that seem like glorified bedhead. Years of sun have damaged your delicate facial skin? Buy a few LED light treatments and get over it. Skin is in, particularly the unedited kind.

I’ve been reflecting on what it means to be a player in the game of female culture recently, seeing as I’ve picked up Emma Cline’s beach-readnovel The Girls. For hundreds of pages, the 14-year-old narrator wonders how to get attention from the men around her and, more importantly, how to keep it. Then she considers why it is all the women in her life hover silently until they can get a man’s attention.

The novel has me thinking: If women are taught from the earliest of ages how to cover our faces, make ourselves beautiful and play that character, maybe the most empowering thing to do is not. To drop the fancy brushes and contour powder, putting our asymmetrical faces on display.

A Saturday morning might be one thing, buteschewing the bronzer on a Monday is undoubtedly more weighty. A highly popularized study that dropped earlier this year revealed beautiful (and artificially beautiful) women earn 20 percent more money than their foundation-less counterparts.

It makes sense, when you start considering the psychological implications of makeup. From an evolutionary standpoint, humans respond to proportionally large eyes. Lids rimmed with mascara and shadow create an optical illusion, eliciting the kind of compassion people usually save for kittens and babies. By putting down your XXL Volume mascara brush, you’re willfully stepping away from the world of drawn-on illusions.

Now, that’s not to say I have some deep-seated hatred toward makeup. I’m a beauty editor who owns no less than four mascara tubes at any given time. Discussing the texture of face masks is the kind of thing that keeps me up late at night. But there’s a time and a place for cosmetics. Use them because you enjoy them, not because they’re a crutch that keeps you looking presentable.

After all, who decides what presentable really is? Is it a magazine’s beauty director, in charge of making sure the issue sells, or is it the star? Kunis, who often tells press about a past steeped in childhood bullying over her looks, reveals her vulnerable side by going bare. If she can do it, why can’t we all?
